Re: recording in a theater lobby?

Theater lobbies, with those hard walls and ceilings can be very noisy. The use of omnis is going to greatly increase the amount of room tone you collect, so such mics will probably drive you to closer mic-ing than directionals.
Start with what you know: Playing in one position, the group sounded great. Test that on tape. Very likely, what sounded great to your ears will sound too reverberant on tape. But it gives you a starting point.
Often, with vaulted ceilings, getting the group out from under the vault, or at least up higher than the floor under the vault, yields a better sound. A vault can act like a parabolic reflector, focussing reflected sound in ways which can be either very unpleasant, or very useful for weird effects on a sound track - but not generally useful on a music recording.
Defining the sound the group wants will help sort out how to approach it. Since you refer to spaced omnis, ortf or both, and spot mics, we have to assume you are working with an MDM or HD multitrack. So get some stereo pairs on the group, and then individually close mic. See if you can create something in post which solves any problems which occur live.
Cordially, Tom
