thanks for the comments arthur - i do mostly chamber music, and it seems that the mics that do the best job are very neutral, flat mics. i have owned three pairs of km184s (which should be very similar to the 140s), and found them to be a bit too bright for many applications in the studio, and rather thin at a distance as a main pair. schoeps cmc64s were just the opposite - more neutral and mellow, but boomy on many things close-miced in the studio, and a little low-mid heavy at a distance, but pretty good as a main pair. i do like the neumann 'color' but i guess i feel the 8k bump in the km140s might not suit me as well as the flatter km84s. also, i think the 84s might match up with my HV3 pres very nicely.
