Erik is probably right about the phantom powering issue, but not right enough to justify a commercial effort on the part of Neumann to make direct and phantom powered mics. A standardized powering system has been a boon to the recording industry. Imagine a world where each mic company had its own proprietary powering system, each incompatible with the other.
If the difference between direct and phantom is big enough, some enterprising spirit will offer the service to convert mics to direct powering, just as tube and ribbon mics were revived and are commercially viable again. If that service becomes popular enough, it will attract the attention of the mic makers, just as the tube revival did, and they, too, will provide direct powered mics, as they now provide tube mics.
