Uwe was absolutally right, changing the bias does not effect the response, but that´s with capacitors which have stiff electrodes, the microphone membrane´s compliance does cause the audible differences, since one of the capacitor electrodes is flexible. Again a case where theory does not match with the daily hearing practice.
If you enlarge the capsule bias, the compliance of the capsule can get slightly changed, since the membrane is pulled inside towards the backplate, making the membrane stiffer, this would induce for an omni a higher bandwidth, since the higher the tension the higher the bandwidth. At the other hand, I would expect a cardioid capsule with higher tension will have more roll off in the bass, and more roll off in the HF part. Think of cardioid metal membranes having always limited bandwidth on both sides of the frequency plot, as cardioids made from Mylar-like membranes don´t.
The effect I heard in the Km 84 was subtle, but in the order of 0.5 to 1 dB. We could not measure it, since we had not the equipment for that.
If I listen to the TLM 127, I get the impression because of the sound of the low end, the membrane backplate distance is closer, than e.g. the U87 or U89. Closer backplate membrane distances colour more in the contra octave.
If it is closer, it also explains the sensitivity differences in the HF region, when changing the bias.
