I've been researching the various preamp choices on the market and am a bit overwhelmed with all the options. I thought I might be able to simply things for myself by asking what preamps were used in historic classical recordings, especially where Neumann microphones were used. I know both Glenn Gould and Vladimir Horowitz were recorded using Neumann mics in the 60s, 70s and 80s, but what was the rest of their signal chain? Was there a universal standard, or were there a lot of different brands and models of equipment in use at the time?
I'm guessing that preamps back then were integrated into mixing boards and consoles? What are the "spiritual successors" to those preamps that are currently available today?
