"upside down" mic?

I see people talking about the orientation of a mic (whether it be "right side up", upside down" or "sideways") having some effect on the sound captured by the mic.

I own a u87 and a tlm103 and I will angle them differently depending on where I need to fit them around a performer.

For example, I may position the mic from above to allow room for a music stand. Or I may angle the mic sideways to get it into position in front of a guitar.

My question is: as long as the performer is singing/playing into the mic capsule at the same direction and angle, does the orientation of the mic make any sonic difference?

Does the mic pick up sound differently when a source is 20 to the left of the capsule than it does when 20 to the right of the capsule? or above/below?

Thank you
