Hi Mario,

The AES22 digital mics are very quiet as you don't get analogue noise and any low level RF interference.

I was astounded how quiet it is when I first started using digital mics (the KM-D series in y case).

Yes, using an S-PDIF to optical converter, you will get all the benefits.

I tend to record 24/96 - the sampling frequency has to be stated when you buy the microphone - it can be changed, but only via a DMI unit. The amplification in the mic can only be adjusted vis a DMI unit. With the connection kit you can't make any changes - you would have to either send the mic back to Neumann or find someone with a DMI unit to change the settings for you.

Recorders like the AETA 4MinX and SD 788T can take an AES42 mic. directly in. I have a 4MinX and also have DMI-2/DMI-2P units to use with a Nagra VI - both these recorders are about the same top quality.

I hope this helps.
