damage through high SPL?

Hi,
I am wondering if it is possible to destroy or damage a microphone - especially a LDC - through high, natural SPL (no air, no movement, just SPL). And if it is a yes (which I assume), what exactly happens inside the capsule when it gets destroyed? Why is large deflection of the membrane dangerous?

Does the "deadly SPL" correlate with the "maximum SPL before distortion"? And for example, how high, as a very approximate estimation, would the SPL need to be to blow out a U87Ai, which is capable of handling up to 137dB?

Thank you
