Re: KM 56 power supply and other concerns

Refurbishing a Neumann KM56, with its fragile, subminiature construction, its temperamental tube, its finnicky capsule, is not a job for beginners, like refurbishing a 1965 Rolex Submariner is not a job for Mr. Fix It, down the street.
The comparison was chosen on purpose: there are more and more owners of high-class vintage products like yours who don't realize that the purchase price may be only a small part of the investment necessary to make it perform to specs.

Hence more and more people offer cheap substitutes for expensive original parts, like the Telefunken AC701, to uninformed and uneducated owners.
Only problem is, as always: there is no substitute tube that will make the mic perform to specs. (The quality claims in the auction you cited are plain maddening!)

So, don't buy a 5703, no matter what the hype (on whose authority did the gent base his fantastic claims?) because if the original tube in your mic caused the noise, you will then need to buy yet another, much more expensive, low-noise-selected, long-term tested AC701 tube.

Therefore, to me the question is not where to get a replacement tube, the question is: to whom should you send your mic?

I suggest you find a qualified, experienced Neumann specialist who can properly analyze and estimate what it takes to make your KM56 perform again at factory specs.
No free or even cheap lunch when you dine with a Neumann KM56!

Best of luck,
Klaus Heyne
