Re: KMS 105 Problem - coming soon

Hello,

thanks first of all for the positive comments.

Regarding some faults described here in the forum, it's impossible to give a real comment as apparently the mic has not been sent in to our service dept. and so we could not find out where the trouble came from.

With the humidity thing: all condenser microphones are rather sensitive things and work with very high electric impedances. Such circuits can produce rumble noise or drop-outs when confronted with extreme humidity. For a condenser stage vocal microphone extreme care in design & production is thus necessary to guarantee proper performance. As nothing in the world can be 110% perfect, there are some cases where microphones do have to be re-worked, and our international distributor's service departments can analyze and solve that.

By the way, in the same way the typical DAT or CD / MD recorder, when confronted with condensation on the magnetic heads, will also display "no operation" until the device has acclimatized to standard working temperature.

Other cases that have caused "alleged KMS105 trouble" finally turned out to be P.A mixers which provided only 15, 24 or 30 V phantom power, but not the required and standardized 48 Volts.

So, in many cases, there is no "simple + solve-all-problems" solution. The breath test mentioned is a simple tool for a first tele-diagnosis; if that doesn't provide any hints, a more detailed check-through procedure in our service depts usually solves all problems.

Best regards,
Martin Schneider / Neumann Mic. Development
