The K56 nickel capsules deviate quite a bit from the "linear": they bump up the mic's output more than 3dB@8Khz. Compare that to the equivalent KM86 with barely a 1dB rise at the same frequency.

The KM88's liveliness in the 6-10Khz region makes this mic pleasant to listen to, as it brings out plenty of air in a variety of instruments: from piano all the way to miking an echo chamber (Neil Young's favorite.)

So, all in all, hardly a linear/neutral tool, but an enhancer of pleasant sounds.
