as you said, "organic material". Wood certainly "works", and changes its characteristics. (Condenser) microphones will not "work", if they are correctly constructed, manufactured, and maintained. And, they certainly do not care and "remember" who sang into them.
On the other hand, there certainly is an effect on the artist (and sound engineer), when you tell them who already used that specific microphone.
