This can be a lovely way to make a fool of myself, but here it goes:

The only time I ever encountered older Neumann mics "falling asleep" was when they had a deteriorated M7 PVC capsule whose marginal remaining capacitance needed a wake-up-call from strong SPLs.
If your M49b has an M7 PVC capsule, this symptom would indicate diaphragm deterioration beyond repair. If your mic has the later Mylar K49 capsule, I would be wrong, and remain with one foot firmly in the fool pool.
