Monitor Monday EP 3: What are Three-Way Studio Monitors and When Do You Need One?

Three-way studio monitors are not just about adding another driver, they´re about gaining control over the most critical part of your mix: the midrange. Because when detail matters, separation matters.

Let’s explore when upgrading your Neumann studio monitors to a three-way system truly improves your monitor setup.

In this video you’ll learn:
  • What defines three-way studio monitors
  • Why the midrange is critical for mixing decisions
  • How the Neumann KH 310 differs from two-way systems
  • When a three-way upgrade improves your monitor setup

Monitor Monday: KH 310

Three-way precision for professional monitoring

Hi and welcome to Monitor Monday.

Today we’re taking a closer look at the Neumann KH 310. A legendary reference monitor built for precision, power and clarity.

Designed for accuracy

The KH 310 features a three-way, tri-amplified design. This ensures fast and accurate transient response. The bass is tight, controlled and extends down to 34 Hz.

At the heart of the system is a dedicated midrange section. It uses an ultra-sensitive 3-inch dome driver. This delivers exceptional resolution and precision in the critical midrange, with extremely low distortion.

Detail across the spectrum

The 8-inch woofer provides solid and punchy low frequencies.

At the same time, the midrange dome adds depth and detail to voices and instruments. The result is a highly resolved and natural sound image.

Neumann’s carefully engineered waveguide around the 1-inch alloy tweeter creates a wide and accurate sweet spot. It also helps to reduce reflections from nearby surfaces such as a desk or ceiling.

Built for real-world use

The KH 310 is designed for horizontal placement. This ensures the waveguide performs as intended and delivers consistent imaging.

Inside, you’ll find Class AB amplifiers. Each driver is protected by its own independent limiter. When a limiter engages, the Neumann logo lights up red. A small detail that gives clear feedback during demanding sessions.

For room adaptation, the monitor includes acoustic control switches for bass, low-mid and treble. In addition, input and output level controls help you fine-tune the system to your environment.

Expanding your system

If you pair the KH 310 with a Neumann DSP subwoofer such as the KH 750 or KH 805 (Gen 2), you unlock the full potential of your setup.

Using MA 1 Automatic Monitor Alignment, your entire system can be calibrated precisely to your room and listening position.

The subwoofer extends the low end down to 16 Hz. It also adds additional SPL headroom, giving you more flexibility in demanding productions.

Conclusion

Whether you are recording, mixing or mastering, the KH 310 delivers the natural, high-resolution reference sound Neumann is known for.

Monitor Monday EP 3 - FAQs

Three way studio monitors use separate drivers for low, mid, and high frequencies, improving clarity, reducing distortion, and delivering more precise midrange detail.

If you need higher output, better separation, and more accurate midrange (for example in mixing or mastering) the Neumann KH 310 is a strong upgrade.

The midrange contains most musical detail, including vocals and instruments. Accurate reproduction is essential for reliable mixing decisions.

What defines three-way studio monitors

Three-way studio monitors divide the frequency spectrum across three dedicated drivers:

  • Woofer for low frequencies
  • Midrange driver for detailed reproduction
  • Tweeter for high frequencies

This separation allows each driver to operate more efficiently, resulting in higher precision and lower distortion compared to typical studio monitor speakers.

Why the midrange changes everything

The midrange is where your mix comes to life:
  • Vocals
  • Lead instruments
  • Core tonal balance
A dedicated midrange driver. like in the Neumann KH 310, delivers:
  • More detail and resolution
  • Better separation of elements
  • Greater mixing accuracy

The Neumann KH 310: three-way precision in action

The Neumann KH 310 is a reference among Neumann studio monitors and a clear example of how three-way studio monitors improve performance.

Its tri-amplified design offers:
  • Tight, controlled bass down to 34 Hz
  • Highly detailed midrange via a dedicated dome driver
  • Smooth, accurate highs with a precise waveguide
The result is a natural, highly resolved sound image with a wide sweet spot and consistent imaging.

The Neumann KH 310 is engineered for real-world use:
  • Horizontal placement for optimal dispersion
  • Acoustic controls for room tuning
  • Independent limiters for each driver
A subtle but effective detail: When limits are reached, the logo turns red. No guessing required!

When a three-way monitor setup makes sense

Not every setup requires a three-way system, but the benefits become clear when:
  • You work in medium to large rooms
  • You need higher SPL and headroom
  • Your projects demand maximum accuracy
  • You rely on precise midrange detail

For compact setups, two-way monitors are efficient. For critical listening, three-way studio monitors take the lead.

Expanding your monitor setup

To unlock full performance, combine the KH 310 with a subwoofer.

This adds:
  • Extended low end down to 16 Hz
  • Additional headroom
  • Greater system balance
With MA 1 Automatic Monitor Alignment, your entire monitor setup will be calibrated precisely to your room!
